Here is a little about it.
Some pistols were particularly popular with specific arms of the Wehrmacht or even specific units. J.P. Sauer and Sohn’s 7.65mm Modell 38(H) was very popular with Luftwaffe air crews because it was small enough it could comfortably be tucked into the pocket of a flight suit. So popular were these pistols that private sales were virtually nonexistent–the entire factory production was either sent to the Heere and the Luftwaffe, while 9mm variants were snatched up by panzer crews.
