Music pick of the week – Hurra Torpedo

The Nordic Countries seem to create such interesting music, and no I don't mean ABBA. I'm talking about bands like The Cardigans or performers like Eilert Pilarm (who both happend to be Swedish), and now, Norweigan band, Hurra Torpedo.

Hurra Torpedo bills themselves as “world's leading kitchen appliance rock group” which the most amazingly demonstrate in this video of their version of Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart…

Special thanks to Brian over at Coverville, and his listeners, for finding this gem.

Music Pick of the Week – huma

Shifted Sound had a great interview last week with Brian and Laura of the band huma. Normally I'm not a big fan of the Shifted Sound interview shows (no offense Shelby). I prefer the music to all of the talking. This interview was different, both Brian and Laura had a great sense of humor and interviewed extremely well.

Of course, the interview isn't enough to recommend the music. The songs themselves were amazing – an interesting combination of styles that are hard to define. The keyboards definitely border on electronica, the vocals are powerful and the songwriting is soulful yet fun (if that's possible).

Visit them at http://www.humamusic.com or just go to Cult Hero and order their CD – like I did.

Music Pick of the Week – The Bees (U.S)

Haven't done a Music Pick of the Week lately. Honestly, much of the music I've been listening to hasn't been something I really wanted to share. They might have a song or two that were good, but some of the other lyrics and band names were borderline offensive. Since I have some family and friends that read this blog I decided not to endorse some of these bands.

The Bees (U.S) are a different story. Their strong songwriting and largely acoustic harmonies should be palatable to nearly everyone.

The Bees (U.S) have a great mellow rock sound. Perfect as a backdrop for your holiday party or while sitting by the fire with a glass of wine.

morningwood

Noticed a (rather unflattering) article over on idolator about the band Morningwood. Brought to mind a recent commercial.

Don't know if anyone else noticed, but this weekend I saw a mercury commercial with the (mannish, but still strangely sexy) Jill Wagner. The background music was 'Nth degree' by Morningwood. I couldn't decide what was funnier – the fact the FoMoCo used the song or that a car commercial with sexual innuendo was using a song that spelled out m-o-r-n-i-n-g-w-o-o-d.

Music Pick of the Week – Endless Blue

A couple years ago I met a friend at work who was a swing dancing fanatic. She was constantly consumed by swing dancing and made it sound like so much fun I asked her to help teach me. While ultimately I didn’t feel too comfortable either dancing or fitting in with the swing dancing crowd, it was an interesting experience. My friend, Andrea, introduced me to many different kinds of music. One of the songs we danced to was Peggy Lee’s version of the Little Willie John’s hit “Fever”.

This brings us to this week’s music pick, Milwaukee’s Endless Blue. A few months ago Brian over at Coverville played a mashup of Fever done by Endless Blue. It is a great version of the classic song. If you are a fan of trip-hop or of the classic jazz song Fever I recommend listening to this rendition.

Music Pick of the Week – Sleepthief

Anyone who knows me, probably won’t be able to tell you what kind of music I like. My tastes are across the spectrum, and I won’t bother to try and pigeonhole myself to any particular genre(s), styles or artists. I know what I like and when I find something good I listen to it.

That brings us to my first Music Pick of the Week. I regularly listen to a podcast named Coverville. Coverville is a show dedictated to cover songs (wouldn’t have guessed that). The great thing about Coverville is the host, Brian, plays such a diverse selection of music from many different kinds of artists.

One of the artists Brian played recently goes by the name Sleepthief. I’m not sure what they officially would like to be designated, but to me they sound like a kind of Celtic Trip Hop. I’ll leave you to your own conclusions, bottom line, I thought they were great.

For more information you should listen to Coverville 216: Tonight, your chauffeur belongs to me, Shifted Sound Podcast 16 or just visit the Sleepthief Website.
